Pitch Wars Mentor Wishlist Blog Hop!

This is it…

The Moment you’ve been waiting for…

Presenting…the 2019 Wishlist for Brenda Drake and Kyle T. Cowan!

Pitch Wars is a mentoring program where published/agented authors, editors, or industry interns choose one writer each to mentor. Mentors read the entire manuscript and offer suggestions on how to make the manuscript shine for the agent showcase. The mentor also helps edit their mentee’s pitch for the contest and their query letter for submitting to agents. Mentors can participate solo or pair up and co-mentor. Brenda Drake

Brenda is the New York Times bestselling author of the LIBRARY JUMPERS series, the FATED series, THUNDERSTRUCK, and ANALIESE RISING. She’s also the founder of Pitch Wars and #PitMad. When she’s not writing or hanging out with her family, she haunts libraries, bookstores, and coffee shops, or reads some place quiet and not at all exotic (much to her disappointment).

Trigger Warnings

Please no stories about terminal illness (Brenda has an ill son). Please only consider Kyle and Brenda for sex positive stories, body positive stories, and stories that will lift up the LGBTQ+ community. Diverse and religious stories should be about cultures and beliefs supporting each other. Rape stories must happen off the page, and must be integral to the message (think: The Music of What Happens by Bill Konigsberg).

New Adult

Kyle and Brenda are happy to consider New Adult, but please be prepared that they may ask the mentee to age characters down to Young Adult (Young Adult encompasses up to 18/19 years of age now).

Mentoring Style

Kyle and Brenda will provide one round of developmental feedback and a second round of more in depth edits. If time permits, they will do a third and final read-through for small errors. They want their mentee to shine!

Kyle and Brenda will combine their notes so the mentee is not confused. The notes will be meant to encourage and support their chosen mentee’s vision. If the mentee is not open to a note, Kyle and Brenda will be happy to make the note work for the mentee. They are not looking to push the mentee to do anything they don’t want to do with their manuscript, but Kyle and Brenda’s ideal mentee should be able to take any note and make it work.

During the query phase, Kyle and Brenda will be there to help with requests and any questions. The goal is to guide mentee to the next step of their career.
