About the book:

Olivia has been Macy McMillan’s best friend ever since Macy transferred to Hamilton Elementary from Braeside School for the Deaf. But then their sixth grade teacher assigned that embarrassing family tree project, and Olivia made a joke about Macy’s father, and now neither girl is speaking—or signing—to the other.

It couldn’t have happened at a worse time. With her mother getting married and an ugly For Sale sign jammed into their yard, Macy could really use a best friend right now. Yes! In 6th grade my best friend since second grade and I became friends with a boy. Then, suddenly, no warning, at 6th grade camp, this boy tells me that my friend no longer wants to speak to me and that she sent him to tell me. She gave me the silent treatment for the rest of the school year. To this day, I still don’t know what happened even though I tried and tried asking.

Sixth grade was the year I became obsessed with death. Specifically, my mother’s death. It caused me to wander aimlessly at recess, wondering about the fragility of human life. Wondering when my mom would leave me behind. Soon, my friends had abandoned me and the recess teachers were redirecting me, no longer wanting to answer questions about the deaths of old women (my mom was 38 whole years old at the time).
Eventually, all I had was my morbid thoughts and my own miserable company. Until, one day, I sat on the wall next to our school’s only foreign exchange student. She was Japanese and only in the US for one year. And, she was drawing beautiful pictures of beautiful girls.
I sat next to her at recess for a week before I brought out my own pencil and paper. I didn’t even need to ask, before she was showing me how to draw. Soon, I learned all her tricks but we hardly ever spoke. We couldn’t.
Eventually, I figured out that my mom wasn’t going to die and leave me as quickly as my dad had done a few months before in my parents’ divorce. I started playing at recess and I forgot about my silent friend.
Still, to this day, if you ask me to draw a person, I use the method that she taught me and I think about the profound Influence a stranger can have on a person’s life.
And, I still, on occasion, pace grass green fields and wonder at the temporary condition of human existence.
