Pitch Wars Submission Window … is now closed!

Surprise! We’re opening the submission window early! It will remain open until the original closing of August 17 at 11:59PM EDT (just before midnight).

For those unfamiliar with Pitch Wars, it’s a contest where published/agented authors, editors, or interns choose one writer each, read their entire manuscript, and offer suggestions on how to make the manuscript shine. The mentor also critique his/her writer’s pitch to get it ready for the agent round. To do this, the mentors read all their applications and choose the writer they want to mentor for two months to get them ready for the agent round. Writers can pick up to five (5) mentors to submit to.

Last year we had about forty mentees sign with agents and eight of those resulted in book deals. That’s not counting all the successes from Pitch Wars 2012 and 2013. We hope to have many more successes this year!

If you have any difficulties with this form, or if there’s a technical glitch, or if the site blows up, don’t panic, just use the form under the contact label above and let us know the issue.

About your queries: It should have all parts of the query, as if you were sending to an agent. “Dear Mentor” works for the salutation and make sure to include your bio (if you have one) and category/genre/word count.

About your first chapters: Upload the first chapter of your manuscript no matter how long it is. You can include short prologues (3 pages or less) or send the prologues later if the mentor asks for a full manuscript. If you don’t have chapters in your book or feel your chapters are too short, send the first ten pages of your manuscript.

PLEASE DO NOT ENTER IF YOU AREN’T READY, once you hit send, there are no take backs or changes. Double check that you have the right mentors for the category (MG, YA, NA, or Adult)  you are submitting, your entry will be deleted if you send it to a mentor who is not requesting your category.

There’s a lot of work that goes on behind the scenes for Pitch Wars. I have vacillated between charging and not charging a small fee to enter Pitch Wars this year and decided against it. Instead, if you’ve gotten anything out of the contest, please consider making a donation. Any amount helps. Thank you for your support!

    I had real trouble finding those mentors I’d chosen from the list here http://www.brenda-drake.com/2014/06/pitch-wars-mentor-list/ to those available on the submission form. Perhaps the link is outdated? In any case, one person I sent to was S. P. McConnell, who I realize must be the Sean McConnell who was said to have withdrawn from mentorship. If that is the case, do I just lose one of my five submissions?

      Yes, I just checked it. It resets the submission window post and then at the bottom shows the message that the form was received.

I have an odd question…

So has anyone ever been picked as a mentee by multiple mentors?

In know that’s essentially the dream, (and probably unlikely) but if so, what happens in that situation? Do we get to have them pitch us? Do we have a Thunderdome style showdown? A friendly roshambeau? 🙂

    Yes, two mentors have chosen one mentee before. That’s the war part of Pitch Wars, which is them pitching, bribing, tripping the other mentor to get the mentee to pick her/him.

Also, question: Will mentees not be notified until Sept. 2nd? I wasn’t sure (this is my first Pitch Wars) and didn’t know if mentors would be contacting potential mentees before then or not.

      Thanks for your reassuring response, and thanks so much for creating, organizing, and hosting this. I, too, poured over the mentors pages and was able to learn about many writers and book titles that were new to me that I want to read and add to my library collections! I will make a donation and I so appreciate all the volunteer effort that goes into this for so many people.

Looks like your submission confirmation is working just fine now. I found my confirmation just by scrolling down on the page. Thanks again for doing this, it had been completely off my radar until I stumbled across it by accident doing research on agents. It’s like fate, since I happened to have all the requirements at hand while being completely unaware this was going on. Thanks for giving aspiring writers the opportunity to make a grab for the ring, brass or otherwise.

I tried so many ways to load my ten pages and I kept expecting to actually see the document (like the query). Most of my attempts were a version of WORD but once, in my frustration, I tried a PDF. Hope that’s not the format I sent ultimately since I did read that you expected WORD docs. Was just trying to find something that worked. I can’t see what I sent, so apologies if the format was problematic.

Hi,
When I submitted I saw confirmation, but just saw you re-tweet Dan Kobold’s warning not to use IE – which I did… Should it still be okay?

Also, what is the proper way to go about disclosing partial requests that are floating out in the aether, or R&Rs?
