When I begin writing a new story, I like to gather images that inspire the characters, their attire, and the settings of the novel. This seems to be a common practice among writers and proves incredibly useful for visualizing the elements that will shape the story. My own journey with “Thief of Lies” began when I was leafing through a coffee table book featuring the world’s most stunning libraries at a bookstore. The still images sparked my imagination, transforming into dynamic scenes of fierce battles amidst the bookshelves. I’m thrilled to share these visions with you through the storyboards I’ve created.

Setting:

The narrative unfolds in some of my favorite locations—Boston and Paris—set against the backdrop of numerous extraordinary libraries. Gia, the protagonist, has a deep affection for her North End neighborhood in Boston and is enchanted by the magical allure of libraries.

Characters:

“Thief of Lies” is rich with a variety of characters, and I thoroughly enjoyed developing each one. They are diverse and each has their own unique qualities. Central to the storyboard is Gia, surrounded by her friend Afton and the Sentinels, with her best friend, Nick, at the heart of the action. If I had to choose a favorite character, it would be Nick. His appearance and personality are inspired by my son, making him especially dear to me.

Costumes:

Gia’s everyday attire is simple—hoodies and Chuck Taylors, reflecting the typical teenage fashion. However, her world changes dramatically when she enters the Mystik realm, where she dons formal dresses for dinners and wears specialized gear for Sentinel training.

Five Romantic Date Ideas in the Mystik World

Dating is a delightful aspect of any budding romance. In the Mystik World of the Library Jumpers, dates are not just fun; they’re an adventure filled with wonder and beauty. Here are five ideas I imagined for an enchanting first date.

1. Santara, Spain
Imagine a date in the lush, green landscape of Santara. Our lovers could hike a winding trail up a mountain with the castle built into its side. At the summit, they’d be treated to a breathtaking view of the entire haven while enjoying a picnic of empanadas stuffed with savory meats and sweet fruits. After their meal, they could glide down the mountainside for a thrilling end to their date.

2. Mantello Haven, Italy
This quaint Italian village, where Gia’s great-grandfather hailed from, boasts winding streets and charming shops. They could sample baked goods as they stroll through the market or sit at an outdoor café, enjoying local plays and puppet shows. It’s a perfect blend of culture and romance.

3. Tearmann Haven, Ireland
Stepping into Tearmann Haven is like walking into a fairytale. With its vibrant, stout homes and a castle nestled inside a massive cavern, it’s a dream come true. Our young lovers could explore the cavern’s labyrinth, ending their trek with a dip in a turquoise hot spring. A picnic under the melodious stalactites, which chime like a lullaby when the wind blows, would add a magical touch.

4. Veilig Haven, South Africa
Set on a cliff overlooking the Aqualian Sea, Veilig Haven offers sun, sea, and sand. They could bask on the beach, savor delicious seafood, or paddle in crystal canoes to discover the mystical marine life below. It’s a vibrant mix of relaxation and exploration.

5. Couve Haven, France
For a truly romantic evening, Couve Haven is unmatched with its serene gardens and candlelit dinners under floral trellises. After dining, the couple could explore the local artists’ community.

Each of these havens offers a unique setting for romance, making any date there unforgettable.
