This is the question we asked our mentors to answer:

If you could tell your younger self anything about writing or the publishing world you’ve learned or didn’t expect when starting out, what would it be?

And here are their answers …

Graci Kim

“I would tell my younger self to live live live! The more experiences you have, the more interactions, the more adventures, the more MISTAKES (!), the more you have to draw on when penning your own heart stories. A life lived in fear is a life half-lived, they say. Well, in my humble opinion, a life half-lived makes for boring stories. Just saying 😉 ”

A white woman with blue eyes and curly brown hairShannon A. Thompson

“I’ve met some of my best friends while pursuing publication! I once thought of writing as a lone adventure, something you did by yourself until your novel was out in the world. I never expected to connect with so many people and to have so much in common with others. Now we lean on each other all the time, meet up for coffee, and share laughs and tears over our various journeys. Writing has become, not only a place for expression, but a place for connection. And for that, I am eternally grateful. ”

Sylvia Liu

“Ignore people’s advice not to befriend strangers on the Internet, because that’s how I found so many great writing friends and critique partners! Seriously, finding your community of writers and serious critique partners will save so much time spinning your wheels, and it’ll help you level up your writing much more quickly. Plus, you’ll have amazing friends to see you through the uncertainties of publishing and to cheer on when they succeed at their creative dreams.”
