From September 22-28, we’re posting mini-interviews with some of our 2021 Pitch Wars mentors. We thought it would be fun to have them answer one question. This is the question we asked our mentors to answer:

If you could tell your younger self anything about writing or the publishing world you’ve learned or didn’t expect when starting out, what would it be?

And here are their answers …

“Embrace the feeling of fear because it only means change is about to come. You’re about to step out of your comfort zone and face challenges that will push your creative boundaries. Don’t worry about other people’s opinions–keep writing. You’re doing good!”

“Not everything you write will be great. (Most of it probably won’t be!) It’s okay to write things that aren’t amazing. You’re not as good as you think you are! But that’s okay: the important thing is to keep writing. There is no such thing as wasted writing.”

“Let yourself shine through your writing! Don’t be shy to bring out your personality and interests in your stories. Never feel the need to hide who you really are because your stories matter.”

“I think the thing that really surprised me is how different the writing skills are for different types of storytelling! There’s so much advice on writing novels or screenplays or TV shows, writing for children or adults or young adults, graphic novels or novels in verse. I had thought that learning to write short stories would teach me how to write a novel, but it’s actually a very different skill! It taught me a lot of respect for writers in other genres and categories, and helped me focus on practicing the kinds of writing that I wanted most to publish.”
