Our mentors are editing, our mentees are revising, and we hope you’re making progress on your own manuscript! While we’re all working toward the Agent Showcase starting on February 5, 2020, we hope you’ll take a moment during your writing breaks and get to know our 2019 Pitch Wars Mentor and Mentee Teams.
Next up, we have . . .
Chandra Fisher – Mentee
Nicole Glover – Mentor
Nicole, why did you choose Chandra?
I’m a sucker for a fairy tale retelling and Chandra brought new life to an old tale with some twists that are pitch perfect!
Chandra, why did you choose to submit to Nicole?
I submitted to Nicole because she specifically was interested in reading fantasy and retellings, and my story is a retelling of Beauty and the Beast. I also really liked her description of her mentorship style, as a guide on the path to the story I set out to write; I picture her as a fortune teller swathed in colorful silks, consulting her crystal ball and pointing my story in new directions less by telling me what to do and more by asking the right questions at the right times.
Nicole, summarize Chandra’s book in 3 words.
Wheel of fortune
Chandra, summarize your book in 3 words.
Three words: Kisses, Curses, and (Magical) Creatures! (I know that’s four, and I hope you’ll excuse me for it.)
Nicole, tell us about yourself. Something we may not already know.
I joined a fencing club in college due to the very compelling argument of a chance to stab people with a sword (fact: you cannot do that)
Chandra, what do you hope to get out of the Pitch Wars experience?
I came into Pitch Wars for the opportunity it presented. I had nothing to lose by submitting and everything to gain. So far, I am loving the community aspect the unconditional support of an experienced mentor, and a built-in group of people sharing the journey together. It’s been more than I could have possibly anticipated when I pressed send!
Chandra, tell us about yourself! What makes you and your manuscript unique?
About me: I’m a Ravenclaw, Luna Lovegood style, I’m a Leo, Lisa Kudrow style, and if I had to be a kitchen appliance, I would be an Instant Pot.
About my manuscript: When I set out to write this story, I had recently read that every side character is the main character of their own story. My brain started wondering what side characters might have a novel worth of story to write, and I came up with ‘crazy old Maurice’ from Beauty and the Beast. I also had an idea for a magical creature coroner of sorts, who dealt in the death of dragons and chimera and the likes. Those two ideas simmered together in my mind until a plot began to congeal, and now it’s a full length book. I can’t wait to share it with the world!
Check out Nicole’s upcoming release, THE CONDUCTORS.
As a conductor on the Underground Railroad, Hetty Rhodes helped usher dozens of people north with her wits and magic. Now that the Civil War is over, Hetty and her husband Benjy have settled in Philadelphia, solving murders and mysteries that the white authorities won’t touch. When they find one of their friends slain in an alley, Hetty and Benjy bury the body and set off to find answers. But the secrets and intricate lies of the elites of Black Philadelphia only serve to dredge up more questions. To solve this mystery, they will have to face ugly truths all around them, including the ones about each other.
In this vibrant and original novel, Nicole Glover joins a roster of contemporary writers within fantasy, such as Victor LaValle and Zen Cho, who use speculative fiction to delve into important historical and cultural threads.
