Our mentors are editing, our mentees are revising, and we hope you’re making progress on your own manuscript! While we’re all working toward the Agent Showcase starting on February 6, 2019, we hope you’ll take a moment during your writing breaks and get to know our 2018 Pitch Wars Teams.
First up, we have . . .
Summer Short – Mentee
Kim Long – Mentor
Jennifer Brown – Mentor
Kim and Jennifer, why did you choose Summer?
We fell fast and hard for Summer’s MAGGIE STONE AND THE SPORE KING. Once we started reading, we couldn’t stop thinking about it. One of us may have even had a spider/spore themed nightmare. Her spores definitely creeped us out in the best way possible. We also loved Summer’s creativity—especially how much real science she incorporated into the plot. Her voice is infectious (pun super-intended), and the layers of mystery as they unfolded really wowed us, too. Most importantly, we saw a clear path for revisions and how her manuscript could become even more awesome. Summer was totally on board and started brainstorming right away. We can’t wait to read the revision!
Summer, why did you choose to submit to Kim and Jennifer?
I loved how Kim and Jennifer had an eclectic range of taste as my book is a bit of a genre mash up with sci-fi and fantasy elements. I was also drawn to their knack for working on structure and making sure the story flows the way it should. They’ve given me fantastic advice already! As an added bonus, their GIF game was strong and their mascot, the KrakenBee, was irresistible!
Kim and Jennifer, summarize Summer’s book in 3 words.
Fungi-licious, speculative, STEM!

Kim and Jennifer, tell us about yourself. Something we may not already know.
Kim: While I like avocado, I hate guacamole, and I honestly don’t see the appeal of this mushy green substance.
Jennifer: I went to a performing arts sleepaway camp from ages 10-16, where I honed my knowledge of obscure musical theatre and played so many non-age appropriate roles. If you ever need someone to explain the plot of Redhead or quote some lines from Jacques Brel, I am your woman.
Summer, what do you hope to get out of the Pitch Wars experience?
Pitch Wars is a great opportunity to make connections with other writers and refine projects to really make them sparkle. I’m looking forward to making my manuscript the best it can be while also forging long-lasting relationships.
Summer, tell us about yourself! What makes you and your manuscript unique?
I studied journalism in college and worked as a science reporter for a while. I got to write stories about a range of topics–nano-technology, chicken farm pollution, wildlife wranglers–so it’s fun to sort of return to some of those science roots. Only now I get to make up a lot more stuff! I think my manuscript’s strengths are high stakes, humor, and the relationship between my science-loving main character, Maggie, and her paranormal aficionado best friend, Nate.
Keep your eyes open for Kim’s debut novel, LEXI MAGILL AND THE TELEPORTATION TOURNAMENT (Running Press Kids)
Kim’s debut, LEXI MAGILL AND THE TELEPORTATION TREK TOURNAMENT, will be released in Fall 2019 by Running Press Kids. Join Lexi and her team as they race around the world solving STEM-based puzzles to win the annual science tournament. Castles, museums, and labyrinths await as they attempt to stay on course and outwit their competition!
Thank you for supporting our Pitch Wars Teams! The Agent Showcase is February 6 – 11, 2019, and our next #PitMad is December 6, 2018!
