Our mentors are editing, our mentees are revising, and we hope you’re making progress on your own manuscript! While we’re all working toward the Agent Showcase on November 1st-7th, we hope you’ll take a moment during your writing breaks and get to know our 2017 Pitch Wars Teams.
And now, we have . . .
Jeffrey Bishop – Mentee
Alicia Clancy – Mentor
Jeffrey, why did you choose to submit to Alicia?
Totally random. It’s not like I scoured her Pitch Wars profile and learned that she was interested in witty voice-driven contemporary, or found out that she works as an editor and could potentially explain to me what exactly “prose” is (because at this point I’m still not convinced it’s a real thing), or Googled her and discovered that we shared some of the same interests, including college football and a certain confectionery shop that specializes in automated cupcakes. Because that would be weird of me. So yeah, totally random.
Jeffrey, why did you choose Alicia?
Jeff has an amazing voice, and voice is something you really can’t teach.

Hilarious dark comedy
Jeffrey, tell us about yourself! What makes you and your MS unique?
Hello, my name is Jeff. I wrote this contemporary YA book, Shermer is Burning. If you read it, I can promise you’ll never think about Band-Aids the same way again.
Alicia, tell us about yourself. Something we may not already know.
I just moved across country to Seattle, and am now a West Coaster!
And next, we have . . .
Jessica Gorbet – Mentee
Emma Wicker – Mentor
Jessica, why did you choose to submit to Emma?
I was on the fence about doing PitchWars. Lots of amazing mentors, but none seemed like the right fit for my urban fantasy/Norse mythology retelling. Then I saw Emma’s blog hop for Pitch Wars where she had posted this hilarious article about how UF is more than just fun and games and sex with were-leopards. I knew from that moment she was my person, someone who irreverently loved this weird genre the way I do.
Emma, why did you choose Jessica?
From the opening paragraph, Inga became my bff. She’s strong, snarky, and relatable. Jessica writes so beautifully – her words are magical, her world enchanting, and her book amazing.

Kickass Norse Exile
Jessica, tell us about yourself! What makes you and your MS unique?
THE ICE MAIDEN is an urban fantasy novel told from the perspective of a three hundred year old ice warrior named Inga who, after one wild night in Valhalla, finds herself banished to Boston in the body of a mortal law student. To earn her way home and back into Odin’s good graces, she must unravel a kidnapping plot involving one of Odin’s descendants and a host of Norse trolls and giants. Along the way she befriends mortal law students and dodges Loki, the god of mischief, who just can’t seem to let her be. I like to pitch it as WONDER WOMAN meets VIKINGS with a LEGALLY BLONDE chaser.
As for me, I’m a slightly smarmy corporate attorney. I live in the wilds of greater Boston with my husband, a toddler who is convinced she is a dinosaur, and a mouth-breathing labradoodle. I won my first writing contest at the age of nine. The grand prize was a pumpkin. I’ve been writing ever since.
Emma, tell us about yourself. Something we may not already know.
The moon is my most favorite thing. Ever.
