Our mentors are editing, our mentees are revising, and we hope you’re making progress on your own manuscript! While we’re all working toward the Agent Showcase on November 1st-7th, we hope you’ll take a moment during your writing breaks and get to know our 2017 Pitch Wars Teams.
And now, we have . . .
Adelle Yeung — Mentee
Laurie Dennison – Mentor
Adelle, why did you choose to submit to Laurie?
I won the scavenger hunt! I’m so lucky <3
Laurie, what about Adelle’s manuscript made you glad to work with it?
I love so many things about Adelle’s manuscript THE HOUSE WITH TWO FACES! The setting is phenomenal. I was immediately hooked by the combination of magic, San Francisco, and the 1920s. I also adore the large cast of diverse and distinctive characters, with unique voices that jump right off the page and a fascinating, swoony love interest. I love complicated relationships, and this manuscript has plenty of them! The world of stage magic and illusion is also a great hook that reminds me of how Stephanie Garber uses the game in Caraval. It is a perfect fit for my taste in YA fantasy, and I can’t wait to see it get snapped up in the agent round!
Adelle, summarize your book in 3 words.

Laurie, summarize your mentee’s book in 3 words.
Magic. 1920s. San Francisco.
Adelle, tell us about yourself! What makes you and your MS unique?
“The heart of The House with Two Faces–stage magic–came from watching TV magic shows with my family when I was a kid. My older sister even got a magic kit. Hurray for finally writing this story!
One of the biggest themes of The House with Two Faces is the various personas we have, whether that’s a persona we only show to our family, at work, under pressure… In addition to being a writer, I’m also a voice actor, and I’ve felt that certain audience members don’t understand that I am not the character I portray with my voice. Some people assume that because you voice a certain character, you also share their ideals, so they attack you for being a “”ruthless, coldhearted general,”” when that is in fact only your character. I thought this would be fun to play with in fiction.”
Laurie, tell us about yourself. Something we may not already know.
I have a soft spot for all kinds of animals, and I recently adopted three kittens that were left behind in my garage. I already have a dog, a cat, a turtle, and a 90-gallon aquarium full of saltwater fish. I guess my pet family is just destined to keep growing!
Thank you for supporting our Pitch Wars Teams! And remember, there’s a #PitMad Twitter pitch party on September 7th.
